Basic Basic: most people don't need super-powerful computers
Article Abstract:
Technology in the computer industry races ahead and with incomes rising, there is a theory that computer sales in Asia will soar. The traditional computer market is expected to grow to 100 million units a year by 2000 and the market for Basic-type machines could double that figure. The Acer Basic machines sell for $1,000 or less and the most basic uses a microchip made by AMD. It has a cartridge drive rather than a hard disk and can be connected to a television screen. However there still those who believe that people who can afford computers do not opt for the Basic, although first time computer buyers should consider a simple machine initially.

Dog eat dog: the biggest PC makers vie for Asian market share
Article Abstract:
Cutthroat competition among computer makers in Asia has slashed prices and is making the companies focus on market share, speed, and agility. A few makers are increasingly dominant regionwide, notably led by Compaq, AST, and IBM; US suppliers took 30% of Japan's market in 1994, up from 22% in 1993, while the top 10 vendors had over 50% of the sales in the rest of Asia, up from 40%. China may be the most exciting market, with AST and Compaq the biggest players, but some reports say no one is turning a profit there yet.
