New World Development Co. intends to invest over $400 million in China to develop several commercial and residential properties in the country. If the planned properties prove successful, it could help boost New World Managing Dir. Henry Cheng Kar-shun's credibility as a worthy successor to his father, Cheng Yu-tung. The younger Cheng had long been wavering in the shadow of his father who was known for his penchant for taking risks.

Hong Kong developer's plan to build apartments near nature reserve stirs environmentalists' ire

Henderson Land Development Co. intends to build apartments and a golf course in a 242-acre site near Hong Kong's Mai Po Marshes reserve. However, environmentalists and a local town board have opposed Henderson's plan, arguing that construction of the facilities will cause irreparable damage to the reserve's mangrove populations. Henderson has tried unsuccessfully to convince local townspeople to end their opposition to the project.

China's new tax laws burnish New World stock

Many analysts are urging investors to buy up shares of New World Development Company Ltd. (New World) in view of the favorable impact China's new tax laws will have on the company. They state that New World is the largest foreign developer with the largest land bank in China and as such, it will enjoy low land costs and tax liabilities in the coming years. They believe New World shares are presently undervalued.
