Baustoffh ndler Quester an Hagebau beteiligt
Article Abstract:
Vienna-based Quester , which claims to be Austria's biggest building materials trader, has become partner and shareholder of Hagebau sterreich, the Austrian subsidiary of the German building materials trader and DIY group. With Quester, Hagebau becomes the market leader in building materials trade and the third-biggest the among DIY chains in Austria. Turnover will rise from Sch 7.5bn in 1997 to Sch 10bn. By 1999 Hagebau's total selling area is to rise to up to 140,000 sq.m. Quester expects the cooperation with the German-based group to yield a 50-75% increase in profitability, which already now is considerably higher than the average 1-2% profit ratio on the Austrian market. In 1997 the 18 outlets of Quester generated a turnover of Sch 2.3bn. Quester does not rule out entering into the DIY market in the medium term as a franchisee of Hagebau, although it has no such plans at the moment.

AUSTRIA: HAGEBAU CHALLENGING OBI
Article Abstract:
German building materials trading cooperation Hagebau is hoping to gain some franchisees of its German competitor Obi, whose contracts are expiring, to join the Hagebau organisation. Hagebau claims that it gives its franchisees more freedom than Obi. Hagebau expects its centrally settled turnover in Austria to rise to Sch 3bn in 1999 from Sch 2.4bn in 1998. The combined turnover of the 108 outlets is estimated at Sch 11bn. Hagebau estimates that the fall of prices in the DIY and builders' merchant trade has come to an end. The company predicts that within 5-6 years the number of chains on the market may have fallen to 3-4 from 5-6 at present. However, no reduction is expected in the number of outlets.
