Bavarian bell-weather
Article Abstract:
The Christian Social Union has gained more than 50% of the vote in every election in Bavaria, Germany, since 1970. However, the party's prospects in the state poll on Sep 13, 1998, seem uncertain. If it performs badly, this would be a serious blow to the Christian Democratic Union, its main partner in the federal government, in the national elections that will take place shortly afterwards. Social Democrat candidate Gerhard Schroder has proved very popular, and the Christian Social Union is also facing competition from the Republicans.
