Newly legalized commercial television is struggling to become profitable in Central Europe. Despite the high number of viewers in the area, many are too poor to pay for cable and subscription television. Top companies such as CLT and Central European Media Enterprises are competing to enter the Hungarian market.

Tube wars: German television

There is a dispute in Germany's plans to reform its public television system. German local officials Kurt Biedenkopf and Edmund Stoiber want to reduce the Social Democratic stations' programming to avoid high license fees and suppress the party's media power. But many are opposed to this.

Two groups are planning to launch different digital television systems in Germany. MMBG is led by publisher Bertelsmann, and DF1 is supported by Leo Kirch, who could become a major investor of BSkyB. Digital TV is a challenge in Germany, where viewers already enjoy 25 'free' channels.
