All fall down
Article Abstract:
Building collapses and similar disasters throughout Asia and the attendant bad publicity are forcing govts to reexamine and start enforcing their safety codes. An emphasis on speed and low costs, and a complex system that encourages graft and bribery facilitate construction with inadequate designs or materials. S Korea, suffering from the worst spate of accidents, is revising its bidding and inspection plans. Taiwan, where fire is the main problem, is strengthening its enforcement measures.

Delayed departure: Taiwan's aircraft deal with BAe remains stalled
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's attempts to start an aircraft industry suffered another setback in Oct 1993 when negotiations with British Aerospace (BAe) stalled due to disagreements surrounding the transfer of technology. Taiwan Aerospace Corp. (TAC) had a similar problem with McDonnell Douglas in 1992 that caused the negotiations to end. While negotiations between BAe and TAC continue, BAe executives have expressed displeasure with TAC's continually growing list of conditions.
