Former South Korean opposition leader Kim Young Sam has outraged democratic advocates there by joining forces with the ruling party and creating an enormous majority in government. This is seen as a treasonous act by students, who have taken to the streets in protest.

Pres Kim Young Sam of South Korea is having difficulties finding politicians untainted by corruption or scandal to fill his government. Several of his appointees have already been rejected. Pres Kim is determined to purge the government of wrongdoers.

South Korea's changing picture

Kim Young Sam has assumed the presidency of South Korea with very little opposition to him and his Democratic Liberal Party. He has the time and political muscle to implement his vision of the new Korea, which includes a new emphasis on law and order.
