Beijing: bright lights, big city
Article Abstract:
The theme for consideration at the 1999 International Union of Architects Congress in Beijing, China, was architecture in the 21st century. However, the large scale of many things in China also made a strong impression on delegates. Beijing is a city spread over 1040 square miles, its new office buildings are on a grandiose scale, and the conference venue, the Great Hall of the People, can seat 10,000 guests. Speakers at the congress examined subjects including the social aspects of architecture, the increasing importance of landscape design, and the importance of the local setting.
