Benchmarking your practice
Article Abstract:
Architectural practices may find it useful to measure their performance against a benchmark, which is a performance standard for their profession. It may include measuring profitability against a number of criteria, such as per partner and as a percentage of turnover. A study was carried out to look at the benefits of benchmarking for the industry. Some participants found the size of their company was irrelevant to their performance whilst others pointed out the ability to measure their performance was very important in a competitive environment. Some 15 firms took part in the study.

London calling
Article Abstract:
Young architects working in London, England, have a wide range of professional and leisure interests. They often find that they have very little spare time, and have mixed views about whether they would want their children to become architects too. Some like to get out of London whenever possible, while others enjoy the leisure activities London can offer, such as cinema and theatre. They live in a very diverse mixture of accommodation, and their views about the most attractive buildings differ considerably.
