Better times for a battered country
Article Abstract:
Mozambique was affected by war against Portuguese colonialists, and then against a rebel army, Renamo, which had support from white supremacists from South Africa and Rhodesia. Renamo gained support in rural areas where the population was being organized into collective farms by the ruling Frelimo party, which changed its policies and sought aid from western countries in the early 1980s. The war continued until 1992 leaving land mines in fertile areas and a need for food aid. Public spending and foreign debt have been controlled and foreign investment has been encouraged, measures which have helped economic recovery.
