Between the lines: press reports hint at identity of next president
Article Abstract:
Newspaper reports suggest that the next president of Burma will be retired general Kyaw Htin. The first report stressed the growing role of the military and said the next president should have relevant experience. The second report told of Kyaw Htin scoring a hole in one at golf. The second story is believed to be an attempt to re-acquaint the Burmese people with the one-time leader of Burma's army. It is believed that regardless of the choice of president, the secret police will still run the nation.

Difficult guests
Article Abstract:
The visit of eight Nobel peace prize laureates to Thailand has boosted the country's image as a 'more democratic, independent and humanitarian state' in the watchful eyes of the international community. The visit was intended to pressure Myanmar to release Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest and to declare her the winner of Myanmar's 1990 general election. Much of the opposition to the visit came from the Thai military, and from China and Myanmar.
