Beyond the business cycle
Article Abstract:
The US has undergone a long period of economic growth, but this should not be taken to mean that business cycles have disappeared. Technological change, inventory control and downsizing have helped to foster growth and cut volatility, as have the growth of the service sector and deregulation. The role of central banks may be important, though central banks may be uncertain as to why growth persists. Import prices have been depressed by problems in Asia and slow European growth. The US economy is likely to see a downturn, though the timing is not easy to predict.
