Big Blue looks east
Article Abstract:
IBM must take full advantage of opportunities to bolster its sagging profits by increasing its market share in Asia. Though long dominant in the computer industry, IBM's fortunes have declined lately as evidenced by a net loss of $6.9 billion in 1992 and by the dismissal of 1/4 of its personnel since 1986. IBM hopes that improved marketing strategies will enable its Asian wing, IBM China/Hongkong, to attract a larger share of the Asian market than the current 11%. New IBM CEO Louis Gerstner acknowledges that IBM can no longer disregard its increasingly successful foreign rivals.

A new frontier; US electronics firm expands in Asia
Article Abstract:
Texas Instruments, the giant US electronics corporation, is expanding its operations in Asia and virtually all of its new manufacturing units are being set up in Asian countries. Expansion in Asia is related to the economical manufacturing costs and a rapidly growing market there. The low percentage of labor turnover is attributed to labor involvement in the decision-making process as well as a healthy management-labor relationship.
