Blasting off: Peking reacts to criticism after failed space launch
Article Abstract:
China does not claim responsibility for the unsuccessful launch of the US-built communications satellite on Dec 21, 1992. Optus B2, built by Hughes Space and Communications, was valued at almost US$140 million. The Chinese Academy of Launch-Vehicle Technology designed and assembled the Long March 2E rocket, and launched it from the Xichang space center in Sichuan province. The Chinese claimed a successful launch and blamed later problems on the satellite. Hughes' study of the launch videotapes led to evidence of a small explosion after the rocket blast, but the reason remained unknown.

Too many ships, too little cargo
Article Abstract:
The recessionary trend in the world economy has led to a rapid decline in the shipping industry. The large-scale reduction in freight orders has resulted in the retention of old, worn out ships, which might have otherwise been dumped. Meanwhile, large cargo-handling corporations in Hong Kong are bidding for the ninth container terminal to be opened in 1995 including Hongkong International Terminals Ltd (HIT) and Modern Terminals Ltd. New ports are also underway in Vietnam, South Korea and Indonesia despite the decrease in Asian cargo business.

All aboard!
Article Abstract:
Cruise liners have began to market Southeast Asia as a holiday destination. Target markets range from the elderly to the 25-45-year-old segments. Cruises are still costly, with US$300-350 per day representing the low and medium price range. Cruises are promoted mostly to Japanese, American and European vacationers. The attractions of Southeast Asia are its beaches, cultural shows and shopping centers. A Visit Asean Year '92 organized by tourism organizations in Southeast Asian nations is expected to promote tourism in the region.
