Bleak and bloody Russia
Article Abstract:
The conflict in Chechnya is not discussed by candidates in Russian elections in Dec 1999, with all the main parties supporting the war. Russians have concerns about terrorism, yet uncritical support for war in Chechnya reflects lack of democracy in Russia. There has also been a lack of debate on policies generally, including economic reform. The Duma has political power, yet the elections are also seen as a key indicator of presidential elections scheduled for 2000.

Is Russia going wrong?
Article Abstract:

Is Russia different?
Article Abstract:
Russia's collectivist-communist tradition does not make the country hostile to private enterprise. A study done before Pres Yeltsin instituted his reforms showed that Russians favor economic incentives. Russia can follow other formerly autocratic countries that have embraced democracy.
