Blind faith
Article Abstract:
The US Religious Right has introduced a bill which could require the US government to impose economic sanctions on countries where there is religious persecution. The issue has become a focus in the debate on developing relations between China and the US. However, opponents of the bill, including the White House, maintain that imposition of sanctions is not the best way to tackle religious persecution in other countries. They also argue that the situation in China differs from that portrayed by the bill's supporters.

Article Abstract:
The US Congress seems to have begun paying more attention to opposition from large companies to its efforts to block initiatives on free trade and International Monetary Fund funding. US companies have also been opposing sanctions, which they feel are hampering their activities abroad. House Speaker Newt Gingrich has now expressed backing for granting fast-track authorization to President Bill Clinton to negotiate trade agreements. The Senate has also agreed to ease sanctions on food exports to India and Pakistan.

Article Abstract:
The issue of International Monetary Fund (IMF) support for Indonesia has become extremely politically sensitive in the US. President Bill Clinton supports the Treasury Dept's view that Indonesia must meet the IMF's conditions in return for funds. However, this means that the State Dept has been rendered powerless as the Treasury Dept dictates policy on Asia. Some State Dept officials feel that forcing Indonesia to adopt extreme austerity measures will only serve to worsen the country's financial crisis.
