Safe as houses: bricks and mortar are making dollars and sense
Article Abstract:
Property is a good investment in Asia in 1997, in spite of a general slowing in economic growth. Hong Kong, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines are all good prospects, while China, India and Vietnam are more risky. Property prices in Hong Kong are expected to fluctuate during 1997 with the reversion of the colony to China, although the economic fundamentals are sound. Apartments in Sydney, Australia, are good prospects and there should be more property available for overseas buyers in Thailand.

However, Asia still has good long-term economic prospects, and it is still worth investing in property in the region. Indeed, wise buyers can find some attractive bargains at present, as in many markets property prices are at least 20% below the early 1997 level.
