British commercial banks have enjoyed good returns in recent years after several years of losses due to good returns from consumer business. The rate of return may fall again if enough mutually-owned thrift institutions become shareholder-owned banks and make interest rates competitive or mergers occur.

The banking industry is thriving in the Philippines. The country's economy is growing at nearly 6% a year. Banks in many other Asian countries are not doing as well, however, due to a variety of factors. A strong international banking industry is desirable.
