Freedom of the press at risk: Lu Ping's remarks suggest there will be curbs after 1997
Article Abstract:
Remarks by the director of the Chinese State Council's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Lu Ping suggest the press will be muzzled in Hong Kong after China assumes control there in 1997. While insisting criticism of Beijing will be allowed, he says advocacy of alternative policies will not, and hints that the press may only back official government positions. His claims that even US journalists cannot advocate independence for Hawaii, as an analogy to Taiwan, are misinformed at best.
