Marking time on Korea talks

Article Abstract:

It is likely that preparatory meetings for four-party talks on the Korean peninsula due in mid-September in New York, will be postponed, due to the defection by two North Korean diplomats to the US. However North Korea was not prepared to seriously negotiated with the government of President Kim Young Sam. The south Korean president has been weakened since his son was arrested on corruption charges, and it is doubtful that the ruling New Korea Party can remain in power. North Korea has different goals from the US and South Korea, and China's links with North Korea have become increasingly strained.

Article Abstract:

US press associations have been exposed to the non-political side of Chinese life, during President Bill Clinton's visit to China in June 1998. US opinions on China have largely been shaped by the US media, which has adopted an anti-Chinese stance since the Tiananmen Square massacre in June 1989. Articles on Chinese lifestyle and social attitudes have begun to appear in the US press, promoting a more objective view of China.
