Bold blueprint
Article Abstract:
Chinese Premier Li Peng's progressive economicinitiatives may provide him with a strong backing in the coming government restructuring process. In his speech at the latest meeting of the National People's Congress (NPC), the premier encouraged deregulation of the economy andthe privatisation of small state enterprises. His projected growth rate of 8% for 1993 is way below that of Deng Xiaoping's ideal figures but the premier assured that it may be exceeded. He finished with an appeal to the country's national pride and unity and praised the current friendly relationships with other Asian nations.

Breathing room
Article Abstract:
CHina's economic outlook remains mixed with inflation down only moderately to 19.4% year-on-year in the first four months of 1995, and GDP up only 10% (seasonally adjusted) in the first quarter. Food prices and real-estate investment are driving the inflation, with the rural-urban income gap underlying the former. China will conservatively need to import 20 million tons of wheat annually by 2000, triple the current amount, though such imports could moderate inflation. The trade surplus Jan-Apr reached $8.8 billion.

Too hot to handle
Article Abstract:
China is facing runaway economic growth as its gross national product grew 12% in 1992. Government officials are already speculating over what to do with the economic boom. While the possibility of government controls on economic growth is opposed by entrepreneurs, a strong position by the central administration can affect demand in the interior and offset the economic activity in the coastal areas. Unless the growth is controlled, basic services will find it difficult to cope with the added burdens.
