France's ruling center-right coalition figures to win the upcoming two-round general election, but the Chirac/Juppe coalition's share of the seats in France's national assembly will likely be reduced from 80% to a much narrower majority. Prospects for post-election economic reforms are assessed.

The alliance between France's two conservative parties is in jeopardy as the parties argue over strategies for the second round of elections. The alliance had 39.5% of the votes in the first round while the incumbent Socialist Party sunk to a record low with 20.3%.
