US banks are not increasing their loan portfolios despite favorable interest rates, because of the steep decline in the commercial real-estate market. Commercial property is rarely accepted as collateral, even though the number of non-performing commercial property loans is falling.

US banks in 1993 are seeking to increase their commercial lending portfolios, and the end of the credit crunch should add steam to the overall economic recovery. To attract creditworthy corporate customers, banks are lowering interest rates and commitment fees.
