Article Abstract:
Should today's trend continue, there should be more than 500,000 portable telephone sets in the year 2002 in Vietnam, according to Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia. With 2.07 sets for 100 inhabitants and 1.6mn sets installed, the fixed telephone network cannot cope with the demand today. Today, one people out of 390 has a portable telephone in Vietnam, which reveals the huge potential of this fast-growing market where 200,000 people have such an equipment today, ten times more compared to 10 years before. 30,000 subscribers to paging networks were reported in the end of 1997.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co of Japan intends to establish a new research and development laboratory at the Yokosuka Research Park to work on mobile communications systems, including WCDMA. 200 researchers will be hired for the laboratory.
