Bookkeepers struggle under burgeoning paper weight; as Indonesian trading volume surges, stock certificates overwhelm antiquated system
Article Abstract:
The upturn in Indonesian trading volume is overwhelming clearinghouse staff as they struggle with the burden of an antiquated bookkeeping system that involves a paper chase. Unlike other major markets such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong, Indonesia is still dealing with bundles of share certificates that travel from the custodian bank to the seller's broker, to the clearinghouse, to the buyer's broker and, finally, to the custodian bank of the buyer. The setup, therefore, calls for clearinghouse clerks to stay up all night to process the flow of stock.

Lippo perceives a market for mutual-fund business

Still, Haas acknowledges that finding investors may be difficult considering that the number of individual and institutional investors in Indonesian funds has fallen from 20,000 in 1997 to around 12,000 in mid-1999.
