Boom and gloom
Article Abstract:
Manila's stock exchange has become impressively bullish in 1993, with its May 7 Composite Index of 1,654 points being a 7% increase over the high in March and a 33% increase since Jan 1. This rise occurred despite general disbelief in the Philippine government's optimistic economic predictions and the brownouts that often shut down industry. The large volume of money now being invested in the stock market has contributed to this rise. Plans for new power stations justify investors' confidence that the economy will improve by 1994-95.

Unsettled
Article Abstract:
The Philippine National Bank's problems continue to grow and draw more attention as its dispute with the Treasury drags on and its share prices sink. Philippines President Fidel Ramos is getting personally involved, though his actions so far have done little to remedy the deeper problems. These include a controlling board appointed for the political or personal support they gave Ramos, and a deeply demoralized staff calling for the bank president's resignation.

Trouble ahead?
Article Abstract:
The economy of the Philippines has largely escaped the currency problems in the rest of Southeast Asia, but a rising trade deficit and excessive credit growth could result in increased vulnerability. Some experts believe that an across-the-board slump may be imminent, with factors such as inflation and high equity prices fuelling economic weakness.
