Border breakthrough
Article Abstract:
Muslim Thai separatists have traditionally found shelter in certain areas of Malaysia. However, Malaysia and Thailand are now cooperating much more extensively to capture the separatists, with Malaysia recognizing that these people have committed crimes in Thailand. However, the Malaysian government is keen to avoid publicity on this subject, as it does not wish to be seen to be taking firm action against Muslim separatists. This would give political advantage to the opposition and attract criticism from the international Islamic community.

Southern discomfort: Muslim separatist violence raises its head again
Article Abstract:
Thai Muslim guerrillas renewed their warfare against Thai rule on Aug 22, 1993 by attacking a train in Narathiwat province in southern Thailand. The ambush, apparently the work of the Pattani United Liberation Organisation, was the latest in a series of such attacks that included the Aug 17 killing to two Thai soldiers and the burning of 34 schools. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad, while visiting Thailand on Aug 21, assured the Thai government that Malaysia is not aiding the Thai Muslim separatists.

Troubled frontier: Thai Muslim violence concerns Malaysia as well
Article Abstract:
Thailand's government hopes that Malaysia will help a new Thai military campaign against Muslim separatists responsible for recent attacks in southern Thailand. Thai authorities suspect that supporters of the Pattani United Liberation Organisation are evading pursuit and obtaining supplies by retreating into Kelantan, Malaysia's northernmost state. The Malaysian government will probably insist on receiving proof that Thai Muslim guerrillas have committed criminal acts before cooperating with Thailand.
