Boutiques - made to measure for the south?
Article Abstract:
There were 55 boutique banks in the UK in Aug 1997, of which only seven were based outside the London, England, area. Most of these operations have been formed since the late 1980s as a response to the expansion in the advisory market and the fact that merchant banks and multi-national accounting firms are focusing on larger companies. Most boutique banks have only between two and eight professionals, and some have links with similar operations abroad. They are mainly managed by people who have experience of working for larger advisory firms. There is considerable potential business in the area around Southampton, England, for such operations.

The need for differentiation
Article Abstract:
Sector specialization is an ideal way for UK private equity houses to ensure that they do not have to pay excessive sums to achieve quality deals as competition for suitable investment opportunities grows increasingly fierce. Specialization allows rapid response and detailed knowledge of buy-in candidates, and allows solid experience of investing in specific sectors to be gained. This approach has proved successful at Mercury Asset Management, which has always focused on purchasing businesses with strong market positions.

An integrated solution
Article Abstract:
BHF-BANK's work with TEMCO is a strong example of the former's success in implementing its corporate finance strategy. BHF-BANK formed a new company and several limited partnerships for the various shareholders in order to allow the TEMCO deal to go ahead. It retained close links with TEMCO following the transaction, and was thus selected to advise on the sale of the company when Europe Capital Partners decided to exit its participation in early 1998. TEMCO was sold to 3i and management in Aug 1998.
