Brazil's woes could slow down a recovery in the East
Article Abstract:
The economic turmoil experienced by Brazil is likely to slow down the recovery of Asia's economies, which continue to be battered by economic woes. While most Asian economies are shielded to some extent by recent improvements in their external accounts, the interconnectedness of the world economy makes it highly unlikely that Brazil's troubles will not trigger a financial panic in Asia. In fact, Brazil's woes are expected to affect Latin America economies as well as the US economy. It is estimated that almost one percentage point could be slashed from the US' economic growth in 1999 if Brazil's sorry situation persists.

Region mulls scope of rebound from economic turmoil; businesses face growing pains, as spending power is subject to nations' overall economy
Article Abstract:
The potential size of Asian markets after the current financial crisis is projected to have slower growth of around 5% compared to the strong 8% growth in the past. Such low long-term growth rates will restrict consumer spending and limit local and foreign investment expansion plans. Forecast for lower growth rates at around 5% is attributed to the high expectations set for the future size of the Asian market that catalyzed substantial investment growth in the 1990s, government rate control to curb the crisis and expensive capital requirements.
