Breathing the air of success
Article Abstract:
China's air pollution has reached dramatic proportions. Coal is a major factor, as is sulphur dioxide, which falls to earth again as acid rain. The country also produces 12 million chlorofluorocarbon-containing refrigerators a year. The country has pollution control regulations, but they are not well-enforced.

A resurgence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis has international health officials concerned, and the World Health Organization states that about 1.7 billion people carry the disease. Multi-drug therapy and the HIV virus are largely responsible for the increase in cases.

Many Americans fear a terrorist attack using biological or chemical weapons, but many experts believe this is unlikely at present. Gaining access to the raw materials and having the technical skills and physical facilities to make such weapons is not easy.
