East Asia bucks the trend
Article Abstract:
The countries of East Asia have been growing although in a modest rate. The worldwide economic slowdown may have affected these countries but not to an extent that could arrest their slow but unabated pace towards growth 1992. Singapore relies more than any other Asian nation on world trade thus, is likely to be most affected by world developments. As it is, all of these countries have done well economically. The main reason for this trend is the increase in intraregional trade.

Saving grace
Article Abstract:
East Asian countries are turning to their relatively underdeveloped capital markets in order to finance the backlog of public infrastructure projects. However, despite the high savings rates in the region, East Asian financial markets are incapable of meeting the requirements of their huge economies. On the average, the difference between funding costs and lending rates in the region is around 400 basis points. The lack of a market for long-term capital is also a problem.
