Bringing back Bata
Article Abstract:
The Czechoslovakian government nationalized the shoe manufacturing concern of Thomas Bata in 1945. Bata emigrated to Canada that same year and created the beginning of what would become world's largest manufacturer of footwear, a private company with 6,200 retail outlets that manufactures footwear in 40 countries. The new Czech government, eager to attract Western investment and managerial expertise, invited Bata to Czechoslovakia to negotiate reestablishing a presence in the country. Bata is enthusiastic about reestablishing operations in Czechoslovakia, and in providing managerial expertise to help the Czech economy. Bata hopes to organize a partnership with Svit, the largest of Czechoslovakia's two footwear manufacturers. Svit was the enterprise that took over the original Bata factories.

Back to the future
Article Abstract:
Ties between Vietnam and the US are gradually expanding but full diplomatic relations will have to wait on US political developments. Pushing them now would probably not help President Clinton of the US, and might hurt him. Recent elections also placed several very conservative, anti-communist politicians in important posts, where they can delay appointments and embarrass the president. Vietnam welcomes the limited US presence, however, apparently as a counterweight to China.
