Britain's colonial obligations

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom may have failed to offer Hong Kong residents the security of British citizenship but the British government should now allow the residents of its other colonies the benefits of citizenship. The British government was able to provide British passports to only 170,000 among 6 million Hong Kong residents and is refusing to provide the same to its few remaining colonial citizens.

It needed a bit of tidying up: three-strikes legislation

Article Abstract:

The California Supreme Court ruled that judges, not district attorneys, should determine when crimes should be applied to the state's three-strikes legislation. The ruling will hopefully alleviate erratic application of the law and reduce the costs associated with applying the law.
