The UK's GDP and exports are up, while inflation and unemployment are down. However, the Conservative government is likely to be toppled by the Labor Party on May 1, 1997. Tony Blair has usurped much of the Tories' macroeconomic agenda, but the Tories still excel on microeconomic issues.

Blair and the Labour Party are almost certain to win the upcoming elections, partly because they have tried hard to appease the business community. Blair has come out for privatization, free-market economics, a freeze on higher income-tax rates, a limited position on labor unions.
