British Museum's comfort factor
Article Abstract:
Ensuring building services to the new Great Court at the British Museum, London, England, posed some difficulties for architects Foster and Partners and engineers Buro Happold. The building was surrounded by other galleries, with the Reading Room at the centre. A glazed roof was chosen to give light to the building but the amount of light had to be controllable because of the possible damage to precious artifacts. Bringing sufficient air, at 45m3 per second, into the Great Court was solved by placing ducting around old foundations and building four secondary plant rooms.
