Brunei comes under international spotlight in role as chairman, host of ASEAN meeting
Article Abstract:
Brunei is increasingly gaining international attention, not only for hosting the Aug. 1995 meeting of Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ministers but also for its effective handling of delicate matters as current chairman of the association. Brunei has previously been a low-key player in Asia and globally, more popular as a tiny state teeming with oil and gas reserves which is essentially governed by only one family. It is also widely known as a country which enjoys economic prosperity as well as political stability.

... and is ingrained in Asean's inaction
Article Abstract:
The move by China in Oct 1998 to build a permanent outpost in the contested Mischief Reef, part of the Spratly Islands that is being claimed by the Philippines, is a clear violation of China's promise to honor the 1992 Asean Declaration on the South China Sea. The building of the facilities, a breach of every agreement that China has entered into regarding the contested area, has increased the possibility of violence in the region. Only a concerted effort by the members of Asean can hope to stop China's determined actions.
