Building blocks of education
Article Abstract:
An Internation Conference for Built Environment in Schools has been convened by the Building Experiences Trust (BET). Participants from 17 countries discussed developments. In Britian, architects and building professionals go into schools but the subject has to be fitted into prescribed parts of the National Curriculum. In Denmark most emphasis is put on aesthetics. Richard Rogers argued that a global perspective was important. Education about the built environment is seen as an important way to direct young people towards the real world and away from the virtual reality of television and computer games.

Breaking the mould: Building mycologist Jagjit Singh believes the way we treat moulds and bugs is fundamentally flawed
Article Abstract:
Jagjit Singh is a building mycologist and has recently set up his own practice, Environmental Building Solutions. He previously used his expertise in the service of engineer Oscar Faber, and he likens himself to a building detective. He believes that infestation problems in buildings can be resolved by changing the environment so that pests cannot flourish, rather than using chemicals. He has developed a method to suck moulds out with a special vacuum, and this has been put to use on the National Museum of Scotland.
