Spending at chicken restaurants has increased from 405 million pounds sterling in 1993 to 530 million pound sterling in 1998, with takeaway meals accounting for 75% of all transactions. McDonald's is the leading burger operator in the UK with 836 outlets. The market is expected to reach 2,219 million pounds sterling by the year 2002.

The UK budget eating out market is predicted to increase to 15,138 million pounds sterling by 2003 from 13,239 million pounds sterling in 1999. Growth in the ethnic food market is expected to produce a 10% rise in market value from 1,380 million pounds sterling in 1999 to 1,514 million pounds sterling by 2003. The average spend per person on budget eating out equates to 233 pounds sterling per person in the UK during 1998, with up to 39% spent in the fast food sector.
