Business vs. ideology: Beijing inches towards liberalizing state-owned enterprises
Article Abstract:
Beijing is preparing to sell some of its state enterprises, but some companies will be organized into conglomerates modelled on South Korea's chaebol, some will be allowed to sell shares or merge, and smaller companies could privatize or liquidate. There is currently no legal structure for merging companies and bankruptcy is often a welcome option for struggling state companies. There is also the problem of industrial ministries which are loath to privatize.

Death of a salesman
Article Abstract:
The April 3, 1996 death of US Commerce Secretary Ron Brown will directly damage US relations with China, as he had perhaps the greatest rapport with Beijing of all US officials. A great cheerleader of commercial links between the two countries, he would have taken the lead in rebuilding the relationship after China's actions before Taiwanese elections hampered the effectiveness of US Defense Secretary William Perry, once Brown's rival in Chinese affections.
