Article Abstract:
Canada has been relatively open in terms of welcoming immigrants, but this is changing as a result of criminals seeking to enter Canada, and the smuggling of Chinese immigrants. There have been 600 would-be immigrants from Fujian, China, who have sought to enter Canada by the coast, and Chinese gangs with affiliates in the US are thought to be responsible. The immigrants often enter Canada as an easy way of entering the US, their ultimate goal. The Chinese community of Canada is particularly opposed to the immigrants being alowed to stay. Pressure from the US may lead to tighter controls in Canada.

Article Abstract:
Negotiations between China and Taiwan face difficulties, partly because China wishes to appear tough due to economic and social problems in China. Tawianese politicians, meanwhile, have to pay heed to voters, who do not want a rapid solution on the status of Taiwan, and favor stalemate. Parties favoring independence or rapid reunification have tended to lose support. Progress is only likely to be made if China changes its stance toward Taiwan and seeks to use persuasion rather than bullying.
