Article Abstract:
South India has 140,300 small coffee growers who account for 60 percent of the total production. Of this, around 137,700 are growers holding less than 10 hectares. In the last two decades, coffee exports have increased from 55,813 tonnes to 172,419 tonnes. In the seventies, 53 percent of the production was exported but now 75 percent is exported. Domestic consumption went up from 53,500 tonnes in 1997-98 to around 60,000 tonnes in 1997-98, recording an increase of 12 percent in last twenty years. Total coffee production by 2001-02 AD is projected at 300,000 tonnes. (gsh)
