COMPUTERS HIT HOME AT LAST
Article Abstract:
The home PC sales have seen a sudden rise with sales of 100,000 PCs in 1997-98 (16.6 percent of total PC sales) and 37,500 PCs being sold in the first quarter of 1998-99. At this rate 200,000 PCs are expected to be sold by 1998 end and the market is expected to treble from the current Rs680 crore to Rs1,880 crore. This sudden growth is attributed to many factors. The intensive price cuts are the major cause. Zenith is selling home PCs for Rs33,500 and of the 11,000 units sold, 90 percent have been sold to homes. PCL which had reduced the prices to Rs20,000 in 1997, could not fulfill the orders. Compaq, a multinational, has lowered the prices by 50 percent from Rs100,000 to Rs50,000. Even the unbranded, assembled PC prices have been reduced to Rs26,000 for a Pentium 233 Mhz MMX PC. The other factor for the increasing PC sales is its vast usage using Internet facility. Its been observed that 73 percent of the PCs are used for entertainment and games, 53 percent for work and 49 percent for children's homework. PCs are versatile with their application areas ranging from education to entertainment, communication and even for vast information access. (um)
