HINDUSTAN INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS: DELAYED PROJECT
Article Abstract:
Hindustan Industrial Chemicals Ltd (HICL) was to set up manufacturing facilities for hydrogen peroxide and sodium perforate with installed capacities of 20,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) and 10,000 tpa respectively at a cost of Rs71.19 crore. The project ran into problems when HICL's technical collaborator, State Institute of Applied Chemistry of Russia, delayed the transfer of technology, forcing HICL to cancel its agreement with the foreign collaborator. With its scale of operations at low levels, HICL managed to post a turnover of only Rs7.92 crore against a projected turnover of Rs74.91 crore for 1996-97. It posted a net loss of Rs0.80 crore against the projected net profit of Rs6.46 crore. HICL is presently reviving its project by trying up with Norway based Kvaerner Process System which will provide it the technology for manufacturing hydrogen per oxide using the anthraquinon process. The project will commence commercial production only in the last quarter of 1999 and HICL's performance depends on the hydrogen peroxide prices which prevail at that time. As on June 1998, HICL's scrip was quoting Rs1.60. (tsm)
