CORPORATE VIAGRA
Article Abstract:
The new information technology (IT) software tool used by the major corporates to remain competitive is Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). One package of this software with different modules links everything together - from factories to head offices to depots. In 1997-98, nearly 150 Indian companies invested over Rs130 crore on software to bring their organisations under ERP. These companies include Reliance Industries, Tata Engineering & Locomotive Co (Telco) and Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL). In 1998-99, the companies are expected to collectively spend 20 percent more on the software package. According to IDC India, a franchisee of the world's largest research group, International Data Corp of USA, the ERP market is expected to be worth Rs856 crore by 1999-2000. Some of the developers of the ERP package are SAP, BaaN, Ramco, QAD and Oracle with a market share of 18 percent, 10 percent, 12 percent, 11 percent and 12 percent respectively. The major companies implementing the ERP system now are Mahindra & Mahindra, Novartis India, Blue Star, Cadbury India and Punj Lloyd. Implementing an ERP package is difficult as the companies have to re-work their business processes in line with the standardised, off-the-shelf packages that have already been developed by the vendors over the years. Some companies hire professional management consultants and undertake a business process re-engineering (BPR) before adopting the ERP. This is essential to map the processes while implementing the ERP to ensure that the right track is being followed. (gsh)
