Caged dreams: Hong Kong stumbles in pension protection
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong remains uncertain of what to do about an aging population that will need expanded social insurance in coming decades. Already some retirees live in cages stacked 26 to a room, paying $77 per month. Families have traditionally supported the elderly, but rising rents, shrinking apartments, emigration, and changing mores have altered that. The govt recently made its third proposal since 1992 for a general pension plan, but many observers criticize it and it could interfere with pension-management registration.

Mothers to the world: Filipinas help Hong Kong boom - at a personal cost
Article Abstract:
Filipina maids and nannies have become a major element of the Hong Kong economy both by freeing up Hong Kong women for business careers and because so many of them have similar financial needs. Already two malls, including some of the colony's priciest real estate, cater to them. The women are paid less than $500 per month and often have crushing debts. They also are often subject to abuse by employers and by Hong Kong lenders.
