Mount Charlotte Investments is a British hotel-chain wherein the Singapore Government has a 30% shareholding investment. The company is running huge debts and has turned to Singapore for fresh funds amounting to US$245 million in return for equity. However, no Singaporean company is offering help and the company does not have a clear option if no funds from the Singapore Government is forthcoming.

An unresolved dispute over a small island is straining relations between Singapore and Malaysia. Negotiations over the island, called Pedra Branca by Singapore and Batu Putih White Rock Island by Malaysia, has been ongoing since 1982. However, a series of incidents including the jailing of seven Singapore fishermen by Malaysian marine police have aggravated tensions between the two countries.
