Unlikely 'debate' reopens sore wound in Singapore

Several Singaporean politicians have rallied around former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew amid questions over his acceptance of discounts on property purchases. Lee has not been publicly accused of wrongdoing but he volunteered to speak before parliament to explain the matter and clear his name. Some observers believe that the whole issue reflects on the growing frustration felt by many Singaporeans regarding the emergence of a new privileged class in the country.

The Office of the US Trade Representative was established in 1962 as a result of Congress's distrust of the State Dept. in handling trade negotiations. Although different individuals have occupied the position of US trade representative, their methods and attitudes toward negotiating with the Japanese remain largely the same. Japan was seen as a formidable adversary that needed to be dealt with through tough posturing.
