Black is beautiful: the darker side of concrete
Article Abstract:
Many building designers are dissatisfied with the concrete finishes of their projects, with the white surfaces appearing bland and uninteresting. Black concrete is a versatile material that can recreate the colour and texture of granite or stone. One of the best examples of the use of tooled black concrete is Oslo's Asker Town Hall, designed by architects Hans Slatto and Kjell Lund. The seven-storey building has hand-chiselled surfaces made from a coloured cement and a crushed black limestone aggregate.

Building in conservation
Article Abstract:
UK construction companies involved in refurbishing museum galleries or constructing new galleries should take care to consult fully with the museum's conservators. There can be many forms of conservation input into a building project, and all of these can bring benefits for the museum client and design team. Advice from conservators is most valuable before the tender stage of a project, as after this stage conservators can only review progress at contractor meetings.
