Calm approach to rights
Article Abstract:
The theory promoted by some in the US that inter-civilizational struggles will be more common in the future has largely been dismissed by the developing world but should be reconsidered in the light of recent events in the field of human rights. The 53rd Session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, held in Geneva, reveals that developed and developing nations have diverged in their values, with the latter unable to accept or respect the notions of others on human rights. Such an antagonistic approach will not achieve universality for human rights, which should be applied in an even-handed and nondiscriminatory way.

We must try harder
Article Abstract:
Human rights have civil, political, economic, social and cultural aspects, all interdependent and indivisible. To date, however, the West has focused on individual and political rights while the East has championed social and cultural ones - all to further specific political goals. The Philippines advocates individual rights, democracy and the right to economic development in the belief that only by recognizing these can the nation advance.
