Can mussels and fries keep the Belgo empire afloat?
Article Abstract:
Belgium-based Belgo Group PLC's expansion plan to open a $3-million, 425-seat Belgo restaurant in New York, NY, in January 1999 through a jont venture with Apple South Inc. of Georgia has been greeted with mixed reactions by the analysts of the restaurant and leisure industries. The analysts are wary of what had happened to themed restaurants, such as Planet Hollywood and the Fashion Cafe, whose sales had slumped after their novelty had worn off. Andy Bassadone, Belgo's chief executive, expressed his confidence in the success of a restaurant in New York stressing that Belgo is not a themed restaurant but rather a food-led restaurant that happens to have a theme. Belgo, which began operations in 1992, is one of the fastest-growing restaurant chain in Europe made popular by its fare of mussels, Belgian waffles, boar sausages and 101 Belgian beers.
